Senior Commissioning Engineer Job Overview

The Senior Commissioning Engineer is responsible for supporting commissioning activities from project planning through final start-up. The role involves preparing commissioning documentation, coordinating testing activities, troubleshooting equipment issues, and ensuring systems operate safely and efficiently.

Working closely with the Commissioning Manager, engineers provide technical guidance while maintaining compliance with project procedures and industry standards.

Key Responsibilities

As a Senior Commissioning Engineer, your responsibilities include:

  • Support the Commissioning Manager and Principal Commissioning Engineer.
  • Prepare commissioning documentation and home office deliverables.
  • Perform equipment walk-down inspections and punch listing.
  • Conduct mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation system testing.
  • Troubleshoot commissioning and operational issues.
  • Develop commissioning procedures and start-up documentation.
  • Manage first fills, consumables, and commissioning spare parts.
  • Participate in commissioning, start-up, and performance testing.
  • Resolve maintenance and operational challenges during testing.
  • Coordinate with engineering, construction, and client teams.
  • Supervise commissioning engineers and site personnel.
  • Maintain strong communication with project stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

Candidates applying for the Senior Commissioning Engineer position should have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or equivalent qualification.
  • 8–15 years of oil and gas industry experience.
  • Previous experience with major EPC contractors or consultants.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in chemical, refinery, or oil & gas facilities.
  • At least 2 years of commissioning and start-up experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of commissioning, completions, and operations.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio.
  • Ability to travel internationally for project assignments.
  • Good English communication skills (additional languages are advantageous).
