Russia has deployed dolphins to protect the Black Sea naval base United States Naval Institute (USNI) said that the Russian navy has placed two military dolphins at the Sevastopol naval base.
The two dolphin pens were moved there in February when Russian President Vladimir Putin launched the “special military operation”.

During the cold war, the Soviet Union maintained a military dolphin training facility in Sevastopol.

What are military dolphins?
Trained dolphins have been used in several naval operations since their echolocation capabilities allow them to detest underwater objects such as mines.
Russia has a history of training dolphins for military purposes since soviet times. Ukraine also had a soviet-era program to train dolphins at an aquarium near Sevastopol but it petered out in the 1990s.
Russia uses dolphins to retrieve objects deter enemy divers and detect underwater mines. During the cold war, both US and the Soviet Union developed the use of dolphins for military purposes.
The US has spent $28 million to maintain its troops of trained dolphins and sea lions.
How did Russia get military dolphins?
The Ukraine navy had resurrected its Sevastopol program to train dolphins in2012. But the dolphins in this military training program fell into the hands of Russia after its 2014 invasion of Crimea.
Ukraine demanded the return of its military dolphins but Russia refused to entertain Kyiv’s request. RIA Novosti had reported that Moscow planned to expand the dolphin military training scheme.

In 2016 Russian navy announced plans to buy five more dolphins for military purposes a bidding process was launched for a 1.75m ruble contract to deliver dolphins to the Sevastopol base.
It is unclear whether the dolphins believed to be in Sevastopol today are the same ones referred to in this contract satellite imagery from 2018 revealed Russia also used dolphins at its naval base in Tartus, Syria during the Syrian war. Apart from dolphins, the Russian military may have trained in sea creatures.
