August 2022: The crisis began with the arrest of the Indian nationals, employed by Al Dahra, in an alleged espionage case.

October 2022: The eight Indian nationals were detained in Qatar, accused of spying on a submarine program.

March 2023: Charges were formally filed against the eight Indian Navy veterans on March 25, triggering a trial under Qatari law.

May 2023: Al-Dhara Global’s closure in Doha led to the return of employees, primarily Indians, to India.

October 2023: On October 26, Qatar’s Court of First Instance sentenced the eight Indians to death. India, led by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, expressed shock and vowed to explore all legal options.

9 November 2023: An appeal was filed, against the death sentence and a higher court in Qatar admitted the plea.

16 November 2023: India, through S. Jaishankar, expressed hope for a positive outcome in the appeal process and maintained continuous engagement with Qatari authorities.

23 November 2023: India’s appeal against the death penalty was accepted.

7 December 2023: The Indian ambassador to Qatar, under the strategic guidance of S. Jaishankar, met the eight former Navy personnel. Two hearings on the appeal took place.

27 December 2023: An appellate court in Qatar, with Vaathi Jaishankar’s strategic involvement commuted the death sentences of the eight Indian veterans, marking a significant diplomatic win for India.

4 January 2024: A 60-day window opened to appeal the case in the highest court in Qatar, as emphasized during a press briefing by the External Affairs Ministry’s spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal.

12 February 2024: Doha released the eight Indian Navy veterans, with seven returning to India. The Union government, appreciative of Qatar’s decision, issued an official statement, with special acknowledgment of Jaishankar’s strategic intervention in the diplomatic resolution.

Who makes up the group of 8 Indian Navy veterans who were arrested in Qatar?

Last year, on December 28, Qatar’s Court of Appeal changed their death sentences to prison terms ranging from 3 to 25 years. These veterans, employed by Doha-based Al Dahra Global Technologies, were involved in training and services for Qatar’s armed forces and security agencies.

The veterans, including Captains Navtej Gill and Saurabh Vasisht, and Commanders Purnendu Tiwari, Amit Nagpal, SK Gupta, BK Verma, Sugunakar Pakala, and sailor Ragesh, were arrested in August 2022 on undisclosed charges.

Captain Navtej Gill, among the eight, had received the President’s Gold Medal for excellence at the Naval Academy and later served as an instructor at the Defence Services Staff College in Tamil Nadu.
