Mathew Underwood has finally opened up about his experience in the entertainment industry and why he left all behind at the age of 19.
In the wake of Investigation Discovery’s Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV Docuseries, Underwood took the opportunity and detail his disturbing incident in an Instagram post.
In the poignant post, he revealed being sexually harassed by his former agent, whom he had trusted as a “friend and mentor”, although he remained unnamed in the post.
“Again, my trust was betrayed and my self-image was crushed,” he continued.
Despite reporting him to the agency and getting him fired, the Zoey 101 star was disheartened as the perpetrator continued working in the industry.
“This experience provoked my move away from LA and ended my pursuit of acting”, he admitted.
However, this wasn’t the only incident he endured as he also accused his best friend’s step-father to have ‘molested’ him which led him to remain silent on the controversial docuseries.
Pleading people to “not make assumptions about people’s personal experiences”, he further explained, “Why am I telling you this? Well, lately, many people have been blowing up my email telling me they hope me and my mom die and that we burn in hell”, before sharing that he received intense public criticism with people calling him ‘paedophile defender’, which prompted him to write the Instagram post.
“I imagine many of my friends in the business are being equally harassed if they aren’t joining the chorus”, he stated, adding that he hopes people would ‘recognize’ that some people stay silent for their own ‘good’ and ‘personal’ reasons.
“Please stop wishing death upon my family and please reconsider harassing other actors who wish to maintain their privacy”, he concluded the post by saying.
