With Cillian Murphy having walked away with the coveted Best Actor Oscar earlier this month, Peaky Blinders creator Stephen Knight announced that the Hollywood star is set to reprise his role as Tommy Shelby in the follow-up movie to the fan-favourite British crime drama, reported Entertainment Weekly.

“He definitely is returning for it,” Knight told Birmingham World at the premiere of his new BBC series The Town. “We’re shooting it in September.”

The period drama, which ran for six seasons from 2013-2022, is loosely based on the exploits of the Birmingham gang Peaky Blinders after World War I. Following Murphy’s Tommy Shelby and his crew, the show first debuted on BBC Two in 2013 and moved to BBC One in 2018 for its fifth season. However, viewing figures skyrocketed when the show reached Netflix. According to Entertainment Weekly, Murphy had previously confirmed in 2022 that he was interested in revisiting Tommy Shelby in a movie. “I do hope we’ll make a film and Steve is very keen to make a film,” Murphy said at the time. “There is more life in the old dog yet, I think.”

Ever since the popular series came to an end, Knight has been clear about his plans to follow up the final with a film. “I’m calling this the end of the beginning,” Knight previously told Entertainment Weekly in 2021. “We’re going to end the series as it is at the moment, but we’re going to do the movie, which we’ll shoot in 18 months’ time, maybe a little bit longer. After that, according to how the film structure falls into place, we’ll set in motion some spinoffs that will be part of the same universe.”

With Murphy once again heading back towards Tommy Shelby’s three-piece suit, peacoat and newsboy cap, there is no doubt that the Peaky Blinders fandom is in for a delectable treat when the film comes together.
