King hosts garden party with senior royals as Prince Harry to miss reunion

Queen Camilla issued a playful warning to King Charles after revealing her husband is “getting better”, joking to guests at a royal engagement: “Well, he would be [getting better] if he behaved himself.”

The Queen, 76, has been frank in her view that the King should slow down following his cancer diagnosis earlier this year.

But the King has appeared in high spirits after throwing himself back into public life following the greenlight by doctors last month.

The King appeared in a buoyant mood on a visit to the Royal Opera House on Thursday night as he made a surprise appearance – which came a week after claims he snubbed Prince Harry twice on his visit to the UK.

The Duke of Sussex spent three days in his home country for the first time since February and while many expected him to meet his father, this did not happen.

A representative for the Duke confirmed that this was the result of the King’s busy schedule this week, which has seen him attend five events in 48 hours.

Camilla was so impressed with the results that she asked Hugo Burnand to photograph her 2005 wedding to King Charles.

“[Charles] liked what I did at the wedding enough to ask me to take some pictures of him and then the boys,” a busy Burnand explained on his way to the Royal Portraits exhibition.

The event at The King’s Gallery, which opens today (17 May), is of particular significance for Burnand as it features “the first photographs that were taken of the members of the royal family in the Victorian era”.

“It’s really fascinating because [it goes] right through until today and obviously I’ve taken quite a few pictures of the current Monarchy,” he said.

King Charles expected to attend Trooping the Colour, but by carriage

The King is expected to attend Trooping the Colour amid his cancer treatment, but by carriage instead of the traditional horseback.

King Charles is determined to attend his birthday parade in London on 15 June, say sources, with concessions as his cancer treatment continues.

Instead of riding on horseback as he did last year, the monarch will travel by carriage from Buckingham Palace and watch the pageantry from a podium.

The Buckingham Palace and Ministry of Defence have been exploring ways for several weeks to find ways for the king to be a part of the celebrations without undue risk to his health.

It is unclear if the Princess of Wales will attend the ceremony.

King Charles snaps up Hugo Burnand as first official photographer

Palace insiders said he is grateful to have been “trusted and supported” enough to take official photographs of the family at their milestone occasions and now to be granted this official seal of approval.

“I always want people when they’re looking at the subjects in my photographs to feel that they could be in conversation with that person,” he said.

“So they really feel emotion and a connection with the person they are looking at.”

The photographer, who previously was by royal appointment to Charles when he was still prince, is acclaimed for capturing other famous faces including Michael Jackson and Victoria Beckham, began his royal work with none other than Queen Camilla.

This was back when she was still Camilla Parker Bowles and the Tatler photographer of more than two decades got the job through a recommendation.

Charles’ return to duties continues

The announcement follows a number of official appearances Charles has made since his return to public duties after his cancer diagnosis.

This week he visited Middle Wallop air base in Hampshire to hand over a role with the Army Air Corps to the Prince of Wales, hosted his first investiture ceremony since returning to official duties, unveiled his first portrait as king, attended a service honouring the Order of the British Empire at St Paul’s Cathedral and hosted a garden party for 4,000 people from the creative industries.

Kate appealed for her family to have time, space and privacy when she announced her diagnosis of an undisclosed form of cancer in March, and said she had begun chemotherapy.

Her husband gave a positive update about her treatment as he toured a hospital on the Isles of Scilly last Friday, saying “she’s doing well”.

Charles, Camilla and William to attend D-Day anniversary events in Normandy

The King, Queen and Prince of Wales will attend commemorative events in Normandy to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day, Buckingham Palace has said.

Charles and Camilla will be at the Ministry of Defence and Royal British Legion’s (RBL) event at the British Normandy Memorial at Ver-sur-Mer on June 6, and William will attend the Canadian commemorative ceremony at the Juno Beach Centre, Courseulles-sur-Mer, on the same date.

The prince will then attend the international commemorative ceremony at Omaha Beach, Saint Laurent sur Mer, later that day alongside 25 heads of state and veterans from around the world.

The Princess of Wales is not expected to travel to France.

On June 5, Charles, Camilla and William will attend the UK’s national commemorative event in Portsmouth.

Other members of the royal family will also mark the anniversary of the D-Day landings over the two dates.

Anne ‘asked pertinent questions’ about women in WW2 navy, says veteran

The Princess Royal “asked pertinent questions” at a Buckingham Palace garden party about the work of the Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRNS), a Second World War veteran said.

The event on Friday was attended by 2,000 beneficiaries of The Not Forgotten Association which provides entertainment, leisure and recreation for ex-servicemen and women and serving personnel with disabilities, illness or injuries.

Anne has been the patron of the charity, which supported more than 12,000 individuals last year, since 2000. Accompanied by her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, the royal couple stood on the steps of the garden to observe the national anthem, before greeting representatives and beneficiaries of the organisation.

Anne, wearing a beige dress and jacket with cream gloves and a pearl necklace, smiled and laughed as she shook hands and spoke with attendees including veterans from all services.

Marie Scott, 97, who lives near Kingston-upon-Thames in Surrey, worked as a radio operator on D-Day at 17 years old to relay messages to the frontline on the beaches in France. She spoke with the princess about her time in the WRNS.

Ms Scott said: “She asked me about my service. I told her where I was but she’d clearly heard of Fort Southwick because she asked pertinent questions so it was very interesting.”
