India is under the grip of terrible heat waves. The temperature has soared to unprecedented levels across the country, particularly in the northern and central regions.
“Yesterday, maximum temperatures were in the range of 38-40°C over most parts of East Uttar Pradesh; at many places over Rayalaseema and Madhya Maharashtra; at a few places over Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, Gujarat State, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal.These were below normal by 2-4 °C over Central and adjoining east & north peninsular India and normal over rest parts of the country,” the India Meteorological Department has said.
The extreme heat wave can take a heavy toll on human lives, particularly the elderly, children, and those working outdoors.

Government releases advisory to stay protected against heat-related illnesses:

  • Avoid cooking during peak summer hours
  • Avoid high protein food and do not eat stale food
  • Open doors and windows ventilate the cooking area
  • Avoid alcohol, tea, coffee and carbonated soft drinks as these may lead to loss of more body fluid.

During the scorching summer months, consuming foods with high water content can help keep you hydrated and cool. Opt for juicy fruits like watermelon, cucumber, oranges, and berries, as well as vegetables such as lettuce, tomatoes, and zucchini. These foods not only provide hydration but also essential vitamins and minerals. Additionally, include light and refreshing meals like salads, smoothies, in your diet. Incorporating hydrating beverages like coconut water, lemonade, and herbal teas can further help combat the effects of summer heat. Stay cool and nourished by prioritizing these hydrating and refreshing foods during hot weather.
It’s wise to steer clear of foods that can exacerbate dehydration and heat-related discomfort. Avoid heavy and greasy foods like fried dishes, fatty meats, and rich desserts, as these can weigh you down and increase body temperature. Limit consumption of spicy foods, as they can stimulate sweat production and contribute to dehydration. Additionally, minimize intake of caffeine and alcohol, as they have diuretic effects that can further deplete fluids. Processed snacks high in salt should also be avoided, as they can increase thirst and water retention. Opt for light, hydrating meals to keep cool and comfortable during hot summer days.
