Videos show damaged houses and losses as large rocks fell and slid from the hills in Sherman Oaks
Local media in Los Angeles reported Wednesday that three homes have been damaged after a powerful land sliding triggered the evacuation of the residents in Sherman Oaks overnight.
Authorities said that firefighters received reports of trees and wires down in the backyard of a residence on North Ventura Canyon Avenue early Wednesday, observing that a hillside falling toward homes in the area.
A house that was under construction received large-scale damage and, according to officials, will be tagged in red whereas other homes were yellow-tagged.
According to Eyewitness News, Los Angeles Fire Department’s official Cody Weireter described: “You have a large debris of mud, vegetation, trees… and rocks and concrete just come down into one of the homes that were under construction.”
He told the outlet: “A portion of one of the homes’ outdoor pool area has actually separated from that main foundation, and so obviously that’s one of our biggest concerns right now.”
Video clips uploaded on social media showed damaged houses and significant damage as large rocks slid from the hills.
Authorities noted that during the landslide, people were inside homes however, no one was injured as a result.
Firefighters are yet to ascertain the cause of the landslide.
They used pumps to remove water from a swimming pool to remove additional weight and stress from the hillside, authorities said, quoted by the local media.
Firefighters will continue to survey the area with drones, authorities said.
